Bringing the focus onto the unique terroir of single vineyards

We are excited to share with you the launch of our Single Site range. Premium wine produced from small parcels of single vineyard fruit from the best rows, across our estate grown vineyards.

Previously known as our Flagship Range, we have been working on re-designing the range for many months now.

Our Single Site range is made up of three award-winning wines: Home Block Cabernet Sauvignon, Block 5 Aged Riesling and Joanna Shiraz. These three wines come from single vineyards in Coonawarra and Wrattonbully, and intimately reflect the terroir and character of those locations.

Due to the complexity of these styles, this range spends 5-10 years in our cellar prior to release, and only made if harvest conditions are deemed excellent. This range exudes quality and finesse and will stand the test of time if you choose to cellar.

SINGLE VINEYARD WINES.

Single Site allows you to experience single vineyard wines from Patrick of Coonawarra. With the newly named range, we are bringing the focus back to the unique environment and ecosystems that our vines grow in.

As head winemaker Luke Tocaciu describes, “Single sites or single vineyard wines are renowned through the industry. They are a select parcel of fruit from one single vineyard rather than a blend from multiple regions. It’s closer to what you're actually tasting from the region or a specific area of the region.”

“The new name of our premium range is to emphasise that we own all of our vineyards and we can control the winemaking process from the very start to create these great wines. We wanted to start conversations about the vineyards.”

NEW LABEL DESIGN.

The design of the labels of our premium Single Site range reflect characteristics of the individual vineyards. Luke Tocaciu says,

“The embossment behind the label represents some of those subtleties of the vineyard, referencing north-facing slopes or the cool climate or 60 year old vines. This understated display of facts about the vineyard reflect those subtle differences in our wine that set it apart from another winemaker’s.”

The labels also represent a contemporary evolution of Patrick of Coonawarra, from the traditional labels of the previously-named Flagship Range to the new generation Patrick wines of today.

2015 Home Block Cabernet Sauvignon

Home Block is a rich, elegant and full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich blackberry fruit is balanced with the subtle spice and cedar aromas. The palate is bold and complex with fine, elegant tannins leading to the long, balanced finish. The cooler vintage and extended growing season has allowed great varietal expression and a bold yet savoury Cabernet.

“Home Block is the block of vineyards around our family home, just down the road from our cellar door. It’s a one hectare vineyard with 60 year old Cabernet vines, so it’s quite small and doesn't produce a huge amount of fruit.

It’s the first vineyard that we purchased with the family home when Dad moved down to Coonawarra in 1989. So we have been making wine from that vineyard for a long time.

I grew up working in the vineyard. I know the vineyard very well, which is key when you're making a premium wine."

2016 Joanna Shiraz

This luscious, opulent and intense Shiraz hails from the cool climate region of Wrattonbully. Hints of dark chocolate and vanilla aromas greet you in the glass. This develops into blackberry and mulberry fruits, with hints of spice and white pepper. The palate is full and luscious with good palate weight and a nice dusting of oak. The smooth but present tannin completes this wine with power and prestige.

Luke Tocaciu says, "Not a lot of people are making a style like this from this region. Shiraz wines in the region are generally lighter, like the Two Blocks style, with less oak, and a more generous fruit profile, whereas Joanna is all about oak, structure, power and tannins. It will age really well as well.”

"Joanna now has a cult following - a lot of people really love Joanna. It's an interesting wine because it's a rich oaky style of wine, but elegant. Very very different to Barossa Shiraz, it's not one that everyone thinks they like, but when they taste it, it really stands out and is quite powerful. It's a complex wine that started off as a small trial with the 2012 vintage — we've never looked back.

2014 Block 5 Aged Riesling

This aromatic, complex & toasty Riesling comes from Coonawarra. Fresh and fruity in its youth, it now displays the unique characteristics and distinguished flavours that a well-made Riesling can. This Riesling has been cellared for 6 years before release and shows intense aromas of citrus, lanolin & a distinctive toasty character. The palate is delicately layered showing lime blossom & a wonderful mouth feel that extends to a crisp finish.

Luke Tocaciu explains, "Block 5 is all Coonawarra fruit, which is more acid-driven and inclined to age better.

Block 5 is from the Skinners vineyard, our northern Coonawarra vineyard. It’s a gravelly limestone vineyard. Riesling likes to struggle a fair bit. You don't want it to grow too vigorously. Nice acid structure and a sort of steeliness comes from the stony soil there.

It’s all about making great wine and putting some aside in the cellar (as long as we’ve got room), then looking at it every few years and working out the optimum time to release it."
